Lobeline hydrochloride, an alkaloid and nonstimulant medication that can alter dopamine uptake in brain, is a novel and potent a nicotinic receptor agonist and VMAT2 ligand, which stimulates dopamine release, and inhibits the reuptake of dopamine and serotonin, acting as a mixed agonist-antagonist at nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and antagonist at µ-opioid receptors.
